Properties of the year
🏝️ The retreat | 🏡 The Tardis | 🏦 The Megamansion
From a £650,000 bungalow in Fife to a £195m “mega-gaff” in California, here are six of the most interesting properties we featured this year. All still on the market.
The writer’s retreat
This four-bedroom home offers breathtaking views over the rugged landscape of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Inside, an airy open-plan living space unfolds beneath a high pitched ceiling, with a kitchen at one end, a cosy wood-burning stove at the other, and a window seat along one wall. In wings on either side are the bedrooms, along with a second reception space, a study and a sauna. The picturesque Uig Bay is a short stroll, and Stornoway airport is a one-hour drive with regular services to Edinburgh. £995,000.
The reservoir
Set within six acres in rural Kent, this spectacular five-bedroom house was originally built in the 1930s as a reservoir and later converted into a modern home. An enormous open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area dominate the ground floor, which is flanked by the bedrooms and a large studio space. An open-tread staircase leads up to another living area with panoramic views and a broad terrace. There is a 25-metre lap pool outside and parking for several vehicles. Headcorn Station is a 15-minute drive, with trains to London in less than an hour. £3.25m.

To see the Prophet’s Hair, walk Jaipur’s streets and discover temples other travellers pass by, to partake in the giving of alms and watch a thousand Hindu priests bathe in holy rivers – among Asia’s modern nations, the world’s great religions converge in cultural experiences of the most vital kind. To be alone in Ankor Wat at dawn, observe tigers in their natural habitat, learn the secrets of pho in the backstreets of Hanoi and hear the monks riding atop flying tigresses in Bhutan – this is Asia now. At Red Savannah, we open up this richly textured region through real knowledge evinced from years in the field. Discover more at www.redsavannah.com.
The seaside escape
Located on a private peninsula in Devon’s Salcombe Estuary, this 10-bedroom waterfront estate dates to the 17th century, though the main house was built in 1928. It has mullioned windows, oak panelling and a Cotswold stone roof, and comes with two lily ponds, a croquet lawn, a swimming pool, a pergola and a two-storey boat house which opens on to a shingle beach. Totnes station is a 40-minute drive, with trains to London in just under three hours. £8m.
The LA megamansion
One of the largest homes in the US has gone on the market, says The Wall Street Journal. Perched on a six-acre site in the hills above Los Angeles, the roughly 50,000-square-foot mega-gaff has 16 bedrooms, 27 bathrooms and 18 fireplaces. Features include a flower-prep room, a soundproofed bowling alley and a large theatre. Outside there’s a detached two-bedroom guesthouse – with its own lift – along with an outdoor kitchen, a tennis court, a 75-foot infinity pool and a “custom swimsuit spinner”. The property was built by the billionaire hotel tycoon Tony Pritzker and his wife Jeanne, who are selling up after divorcing earlier this year. $195m.
The tardis
This three-bedroom house in Newport-on-Tay, Fife, looks like a single-storey bungalow at street level, but extends two floors down to a sea wall at the back. Inside it has been meticulously renovated with gas fireplaces throughout, a walk-in pantry, a bar and underfloor heating. There are panoramic views over the River Tay to Dundee from almost every window. Dundee station is a 10-minute drive, with trains to Edinburgh in 90 minutes. £650,000.
The old ballroom
This expansive three-bedroom flat is the ballroom of a former Edwardian hotel in southwest London. The main living space sits below its stunning stuccoed dome, flanked by one small bedroom and bathroom, a study, and the kitchen. Two further bedrooms – both en-suite – are on the mezzanine level, which features original plasterwork throughout. There is a small terrace and a working fireplace. Loughborough Junction station is a 12-minute walk, and Stockwell Tube station is also nearby. £1.15m.
